But what if you don’t remember a single word but just tune ??!!!

Hum to search is a beautiful new feature by Google. It is not so new, as it was released around October 2020. It is available on all formats iOS and Android. The model works in several languages, so you are sorted for foreign songs as well. Since I learned about this new feature, I have used it in various capacities and worst conditions, yet always got the name!

How to Use Hum to Search

You can use the Hum the Tune to search feature on Google if you follow these steps:

• Open the Google app on your phone
• Click on the microphone icon. You can find it on the right side of the search bar.
• Either Google will give you a prompt “What’s this song” or you can say “Hey Google, What is this song?”

• As you ask the feature will start listening; this is the time to hum the tune or sing the melody.
• It will take roughly 15 seconds of your performance for Google to decode the song.

• Soon you will see search results for the song. As I tested, I got 9 out 10 times what I was looking for and I was amazed.

If you are having problems getting accurate results, here is how you can hum to search for more accuracy:

• Hum the tune as accurately as possible
• You need to utilize those 10-15 seconds when Google is listening to the tune
• Best to hum the chorus or verse of the song
• Humming helps, hum your heart out
• Google will not be able to figure out the song if you are humming in low pitch or if there is a lot of background noise.

I was sitting in the café and they played their usual playlist. There is a particular song, which I never could figure out because of rap, and fast music, but then there were some segments where music was elaborate and louder than the song. I clicked on “What’s this song” and raised my phone (as I was in a concert) to reach closer to the speakers.

The walk of shame was hardly for 10 seconds and bam! Google figured it out for me. Apart from some weird stares, I got a nod from the bloke with headphones sitting in the far corner. He gets it!  

How Does the Google Hum to Search Feature Work?

The hum the tune to search feature is a work of the class. It uses machine learning to figure out the song with a piece of melody you hum. As you hum the song or tune, Google’s model that works with machine learning converts the humming and singing into a number sequence.

The sequence tries to identify other details such as the type of melody, singer’s voice, instrument, etc. Google then uses the number sequence against the database of songs, which are matched from the sequence. Soon, there will be a match or four.
